Zwroty: last year and in the last year mimo, że wydają się być podobne, istotnie różnią się co do znaczenia. Last year oznacza „w zeszłym roku” (rok kalendarzowy, który już minął) i wydarzenia, które wówczas się zdarzyły opisujemy za pomocą czasu Past Simple, np. 

I  saw a lot of interesting places last year (= in the last calendar year).

In the last year, natomiast, oznacza okres ostatnich 356 dni aż do chwili obecnej. Sytuacja lub czynność, która zdarzyła się in the last year, zdarzyła się w którymś momencie w ciągu ostatnich 365 dni, dlatego jest wyrażana za pomocą czasu Present Perfect, np.  

I have seen a lot of interesting places in the last year (=in the last twelve months).

Zwrot in the last year nie musi się jednak odnosić tylko do teraźniejszości. 

In the last year of his life, he composed a cycle of ten romantic songs.
